Family Only Part of the Reason Washington Star Jake Locker Declined Invite to NFL Draft

Every spring, usually the first couple weeks into April, the NFL announces which elite prospects will be attending the NFL Draft in New York City. Some of this year’s class include: Auburn’s Cam Newton and Nick Fairly, Georgia’s A.J. Green, LSU’s Patrick Patterson, and Missouri’s Blaine Gabbert. However, one player that will not be in attendance is former Washington quarterback Jake Locker.

There were some questions if some or any one these players would be in attendance due to the ongoing lockout. Instead, Locker, who did receive an invitation, but declined, will be about 2,400 miles away watching and waiting for his name to be called with the most important people in his life, his family. As Locker told the Victor and Matt podcast, “I thought I wouldn’t go for a long time because my family is a huge part of my life. The hometown where I grew up means a lot to me. That’s where it all started and those people have always been there throughout my whole life, the good and the bad. I want to be able to share it with people that have been through the whole process with me.”

While Locker’s decision to watch the draft with his family is respectful, the fact he is expected to be a late first round pick may also play a part in the decision making. A year ago, Locker was projected by many to be the top pick in the draft. If he had forgone his senior season, there is no question he would have walked across the stage and shook hands with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Generally speaking, the athletes who attend the draft and its festivities are more likely to hear their names called early with the first few picks. If there are any uncertainties players decline the invitation. No one wants to be the last player picked from the 20 or so invitees. And while Locker seems sincere in his decision, if his name was going to be one of the first Goodell called, you better believe he would be there to shake hands with the commissioner.
